Red Dragon Fruit, Heart Healthy

by MBG Online on April 19, 2017

Who knew there was a plant with a flower like an explosion of flame, which produces a beautiful but short-lived fruit with the appearance of a brilliant pink rosebud.

Some dragon fruits have red or yellow skin (which looks a little like a soft pineapple with spikes) and white or red flesh, but always the beginnings of overlaid leaves, similar to an artichoke, and an abundance of small, black, edible seeds. The flavor is mildly sweet, like a blend of kiwi and pear, and it has a crunchy texture.

Origin
In tropical and subtropical regions in South America and Asia, the dragon fruit flourishes and grows in abundance. Appropriately named, the dragon fruit’s outer skin is cactus-like, resembling that of the scales of a mythical dragon. Considered a cactus plant, its vibrant green, and reddish-pink hues indicate that the fruit is full of nutrients, while the creamy white flesh spotted with black seeds gives way to many rich and natural properties.

Vietnam is the only country in Asia producing dragon fruits on a commercial scale. Originating in Central America, the dragon fruit plants were brought to Vietnam more than 50 years ago and after that production and export ballooned to 400,000 tons in 2013. The dragon fruit sets on cactus-like trees 30–50 days after flowering and can sometimes have 5-6 cycles of harvests per year.

Seasons/Availability
Dragon Fruit is available sporadically throughout the year. Thanks to the producers from all over the world. This fruit can be easy to be found at your local fruits store. Even in Malaysia, we also have our local producers supplying dragon fruit to the local fruit shop and grocery stores.
